DROP 4: BAILEY PRADO

Bailey Prado is the fantastical crochet and upcycled fashion brand, with every piece handmade in LA by Bailey herself.

Her mission is to spark joy and excitement because "when something is both comfortable and well-made, confidence naturally follows".

Bailey. We are THRILLED to have you as our first partner across the pond. How would you describe the Bailey Prado brand?

"The words I would use to describe Bailey Prado are playful, bold, and endearing. These words capture the energy and personality behind the brand—a mix of creativity, confidence, and charm that resonates with people."

"I first learned how to crochet while studying abroad in London during a textiles class. We explored various techniques, but crochet really clicked with me. There was something magical about turning a simple ball of yarn into something unique and tangible. I threw myself into making outfits, skipping formal patterns or rules, because I was driven by the sheer joy of creating."

What do you look for in knickers? Or 'panties' should I say...

"Comfort, cuteness, and confidence. For me, feeling good in what I wear starts with pieces that fit well and feel great."

You've spoken out about Shein stealing over 45 of your designs. What advice would you give on shopping habits in the age of fast fashion?

"I always encourage people to think about where they shop and what materials they’re putting on their bodies. Our choices have ripple effects on the planet and each other. Fast fashion might seem appealing for keeping up with trends, but it’s worth considering the environmental and social impact. I totally understand that shopping from small or independent brands isn’t always affordable."

"That said, there are meaningful ways to support these brands, like sharing their work or engaging with them on social media. Personally, I haven’t shopped at a fast fashion store in years but instead I turn to second-hand and vintage shops, which feel more thoughtful and sustainable."

What does collaboration mean to you in the small business world?

"Collaboration is community. I’ve met so many amazing creatives through collaborations within the small business world. It’s quite radical to share audiences and help each other - collaboration across businesses goes against the neoliberal model of work and individual success. It’s communal, and I think it’s the key to ensuring small businesses continue to thrive within a capitalism that seems to want business monoculture."

We're starting the year with a bang. What are you proudest of when you look back on 2024?

"I’m proud of the time I took to rest and focus on my mental health. It’s not something we often talk about as business owners, but it’s so important. Running a small brand comes with stress and pressure and burnout can sneak up quickly"

"I’ve realized that to stay creative and bold in my work, I need to nurture that same energy within myself. Taking a step back felt counterintuitive at first—in today’s non-stop culture, it’s easy to feel like you’re falling behind. But prioritizing my well-being allowed me to create from a positive place.

"I want to encourage everyone to explore hobbies or activities that bring them joy without pressure or judgment. When we nurture our creativity and confidence, we can achieve amazing things. For me, that’s when my brand truly shines."

This is so important - and to see everything you still achieved. Tell us about SZA!

"I designed a custom piece for SZA, which she wore on her latest tour. That experience was such a rewarding reminder of what’s possible when you take care of yourself."

What are you most excited about for the rest of the year—both personally and professionally?

"I’m so excited to kick off the new year with a collaboration and venture into designing underwear. Pushing boundaries and trying new things creatively is so important. I think it sets the tone for 2025—a year where I hope to continue growing as a designer and person while honing in on what truly drives my passion."
